Cathryn says:  Haunting, gripping, riveting, heartbreaking, challenging, thought provoking, devastating, enthralling, tragic, unforgettable, poignant, affecting, hopeful…

There are 13 reasons why Hanna Baker committed suicide, and thirteen people who are going to find out what part they played her decision. Over the course of one night Clay Jensen will learn all of their secrets and the part that he played in her choice.

Told in alternating voices as Clay listens to recordings Hanna left behind the reader is given a voyeuristic glimpse into Hanna’s high school experience and the little things that pile up driving her to her decision.

Once I started this story I could not stop until I heard Hanna’s final words and found out where the journey would lead Clay.

Cathryn says:  Welcome to The Gallagher Academy for exceptional girls, or as the students like to think of it spy high. Main character Cammie Morgan is brilliant and a CIA legacy, her mother and father were both spies, but when her father failed to return from a mission, mom decided to play it safe and take a job as the Headmistress of the elite private academy.

Cammie and her friends can speak 14 different languages and build a high tech surveillance system but they have no idea how to be normal teens. The one language this super genius can’t seem to comprehend is ‘boy’, and it is driving her crazy.

On her very first a training exercise for Covert Operations, trailing one of their own teachers in town she runs into Josh a regular teen boy and does what she has been trained to do, lie. Making up an entire life for herself to keep him from finding out the truth about Gallagher, then putting her training to work to make sure he is who he says he is, Cammie and her cohorts get in a bit over their heads.

This is the start to a great series; it is funny and touching with lots of cool spy stuff and adventure at every turn. It features strong female characters who are not perfect but can take care of themselves and their friends, they are also endearing in that boys are like an alien world to them but they are not all boy crazy, there is no drinking or drugs which is rather refreshing in this genre.

Cathryn says:  What if you could talk to the dead? What if sometimes they were just annoying? 16-year-old Suze Simon is gifted/cursed with the ability to communicate with ghosts. Unfortunately they usually want something and as a mediator between the living and the dead it is her responsibility to help them get it. What Suze really wants as her family moves to California and she starts a new school, is to be normal. That’s not going to happen. Suze meets a much older mediator and begins to learn more about her responsibilities. She also meets Jesse, the ghost of a young man who died in the 1800’s and happens to live in her room.

The first installment in this series features a vengeful spirit who refuses to rest until she gets even with the boy who dumped her. The one she blames for her suicide. Another involves a group of popular teens killed in a car accident out to kill the fellow student they claim ran them off the road. In the final installments Suze meets another mediator her own age who has dubious intentions- to say the least. Each book has its own story but also carries on with Suze’s life and the relationship developing between she and Jesse.

This series combines mystery, suspense, humor, and romance, and so will appeal to teens with various tastes in reading.

Well paced and exciting the tale follows, now, Lord Takeo Otori and his bride Kaede as they fight to unite the three countries. As predicted there are five battles, four to win and one to lose but Takeo must survive them all to rule from sea to sea.

There is political and social intrigue, class and religious struggles and the constant threat of betrayal. Incorporating, ninjas, pirates and feudal lords, Hearn keeps the suspense up and characters even the lesser ones are well developed.
