Fantasy for teens and middle schoolers is getting more sophisticated. Adult readers are enjoying this genre and some book clubs are reading these great books.

The Hunger Games
If you haven't tried this series yet, we highly recommend it for both adults and teens. The premise sounds pretty grim but it is a great series that will keep your teen reading. Basically it is Survivor meets political oppression but it is a fascinating read.

Divergent (Divergent, #1)
Rose's thoughts:
For a YA book, this book really takes it to the limit. Alot of people are comparing this to The Hunger Games and rightly so, yet a bit more edgy in my opinion.
The world is divided into five factions:
Amity (peace)
Erudite (knowledge)
Abnegation(selflessness)
Dauntless (brave)
Candor (honesty)
But how long can people live with only one virtue. This is the basis of our story. We also have Divergents, but wouldn't want to spoil, so nuff said about that.
At 16 the children from each faction may choose to stay with their factions or chose another they feel a calling for. Our protagonist chooses Dauntless and here our story begins.
I felt this first book was more of a setting up for the future books as there are many unanswered questions and it leaves you on a bit of a cliffhanger. I thought the set up was nicely done. Many loose ends occur here which you want resolutions for so it will keep you interested enough in the next book.
The elements that this story touches on are: suicide, murder, betrayals, genocide, drinking and some sexual content however not graphic, just known. I would say 14 on up depending on teens maturity as this book is a bit more edgy for YA.
Overall, I look forward to reading this series.

The Alchemyst
Lori Says: For any child who likes Harry Potter, or Percy Jackson, this series will blow them away! The legendary Nicholas Flammel, protector of the Codex, a book of knowledge, magic and prophecies, and the only human who holds the secret to the immortality potion, is on a mission to find a special set of twins.
Sophie and Josh are the twins prophesized in the Codex. They have pure silver, and pure gold auras, and once awakened and trained in the four elemental magics, they have the power to stop the Dark Elders from returning from the Shadowrealms and enslaving mankind.
This series is full of characters from legend, myth and monsters from nightmares. From ancient Greek Gods to creatures found only in mythology, these books will astound readers with pages of action packed battles, and mind blowing magic! I read this book and the sequel, The Magician, in one day. I am already nearly finished with the third, The Sorceress . These books are a wild, wonderful race with characters from history, and imagination. I recommended these to anyone who enjoys Percy Jackson or Harry Potter.

The Dark and Hollow Places (The Forest of Hands and Teeth, #3)
Rose's thoughts:
"What would you do if you knew you only had a few more days to live?"
That seems to be the premise for book 3 in this series which is also the best of the three.
Book 1 protagonist was Mary, the girl who eventually raises our girl in book 2 which is Gabry. Book 3 carries an entirely different voice, Annah and the far more strong and interesting one of them all.
Annah lives in Dark City (New York) and has survived most of her life within the buildings scavenging for goods along with Elias who has been gone for 3 years. She is definitely a surviver. Having been badly scared with barbed wire over half her face and body, it seems to have defined part of who she is. She is rough and tumble, yet vulernable at the same time. I mostly like her. This is her adventure which ultmiately ties all our characters together, Catcher, Elias, Gabry and Annah.
This was the best of the three being more gritty and had more teeth and scary moments. Things came to a head in this book between the living and dead and who will survive. First of all, I love dystopian stories and how YA is trying to use this premise to engage it's young readers. My problems with these books is the teen angst and love triangles that seem to always be there. Personally I think the reactions of these characters are very unrealistic. First and foremost on anyone minds would be survival but these young people are always worried about does he love me or doesn't he? I don't mind that there are some elements of romance, but it needs to not be the main story. Especially when one is surrounded by death and destruction. It somehow doesn't fit or work for me.
The author is badly in need of someone to tell her that she is repetitive. She constantly reuses the terms of "blushing" "I feel the heat in my face", etc. This happens ALL THE TIME! The other is how whenever anything goes wrong, it's one of the main characters faults which things happen that have nothing to do with them, yet they take the blame and have pity parties.
However, I did keep to the series and did enjoy most of them for what they were. I realize they were YA and gave some wiggle room. Mostly due to her view of the world as the zombies take over more and more and the living become less and less. I liked her way of building a sort of government. The Protectorate which were created to help the living and using the Recruits as their military until the rebellion. Making some interesting ways in which the society de-evolved into utter cruelty.
The line "What would you do if you knew you only had a few more days to live?" was used throughout the story and it's actually a good one. These people may have only a few days at any given time, would they choose to just survive each day, or actually choose to live and rebuild? Being surrounded by such dismay, what will they choose, what would you choose.
It's a good question about choices and hope no matter under any circumstances. I think the author was trying to do bring awareness here to some extent and I appreciated that.

Fablehaven
Lori Says: A wonderful new voice in children’s fantasy. Kendra and her brother Seth must spend two weeks with their Grandparents while their parents are on a cruise. What no one knows is that the estate is actually a sanctuary for fairies, imps and other wonderfully magical creatures, not all of whom are good. Seth, far too curious for his own good continually breaks the magic laws and treaties and causes catastrophes that lead to the freeing of a demon, a witch, and the possible destruction of Fablehaven. Only Kendra, immune to all magical retribution, because she has not broken any of their laws, can save the sanctuary. I am looking forward to reading the next two novels in this series. Absolutely fantastic story. Read it with your children or on your own!
