Bohemian/Boho – Reflecting on the fashion style of “boho-chic” in the early years of the 21st century, the Sunday Times thought it ironic that “fashionable girls wore ruffle floral skirts in the hope of looking bohemian, nomadic, spirited and non-bourgeois”, whereas “gypsy girls themselves … are sexy and delightful precisely because they do not give a hoot for fashion”.

Stylist Rachel Zoe suddenly became the name to watch as she styled the likes of Nicole, Lindsay Lohan, and Micha Barton, turning them into fashionistas practically overnight. The rise of the Zoe-bots came to a halt when reports were made about her client’s weight loss, including Nicole who shrunk from a size8 to a 0 in a matter of months.

  • Any starlet knows the bohemian look is all about the dress, whether that be the maxi dress, the vintage tea dress, or the seventies-inspired mini. For a summer wedding why not wear a floor-skimming maxi dress with embellished flat sandals. Make a visit to your local vintage shop and see what treasures you can uncover.
  • An oversized tote will take you from the beach to the bars, in bohemian-inspired colors such as purple, tan, and cream. Like Sienna maybe add a touch of class with a classic Chanel handbag, although not all of us can afford the hefty price tag imitations of the bag are available all over the high street.
  • You will always see Nicole or Mary-Kate with a piece of statement jewelry on, finishing off the outfit. Oversized necklaces and cocktail rings are a fabulous way to capture the bohemian vibe, especially if they are antique. But don’t go raiding granny’s jewelry box just yet, shops like Forever 21 and Topshop do some fantastic costume jewelry for a purse-friendly price.
  • Faux fur was huge when Rachel Zoe was huge and thanks to designers such as Chanel and Lavin is back next season. Invest in a faux fur gilet to wear over a leather jacket and a tea dress. Or even team a folk-inspired top and skinny jeans with some fabulous pumps.

Hair and Makeup should be kept simple and fancy-free. The bohemian style is all about laid-back, understated glamour.

Make-up should be light, using neutral colors and taking a highlighter to the cheekbones and just under the eyebrows. Lips should be kept glossy in a light pink or bronze shade.

Hair should be left to dry naturally, keeping a light wave as shown in the photographs below, grab two pieces of hair at the front and pin them back off your face using Kirby grips. This is an easy style to recreate and will last all day with the help of a little spritz of hairspray.
